Project #2 -- Art Gallery Visit #1

1. Which artworks make an impact of impression on me? Why?

A. "Untitled" by Marshall Scheuttle was a LightJet Digit C-Print in 2008. This picture was very interesting to time. The girl in the front of the picture really stood out. She look as if she was confussed or out of place. This picture made an impact on me. The setting looks like either a college party or at some bar. I feel as if it had such an impact on me because I am currently a college student and I see what people look like looking in from a different side. It seems as if the people were not themselves. It is very interesting to see this from an artwork and an artists viewpoint.

B. John Aheam's sculpture, "Pinwheel" had an impact on me. It is a sculpture of a bunch of hands in a circle. By looking at this artwork, it made me come to the conclusion everyone together as one. The hands are all reaching out into the center of the cirle. To me a circle means unity and I feel as if that is what he was trying to portray by this artwork.
John Aheam, "Pinwheel ", Plaster, 1998

C. Being a Fashion Student, clothing really stands out to me; therefore "L'Ambitieuse" (Political Woman) or also known as "The Reception" by James Jacques Joseph Tissot, had an impact on me. The lady is standing there in a Victorian dress, today, many pieces of clothing are based off of this look of the Victorian dress, from the high collars to the ruffles and the length of the dress. History really has an impact on today, especially with Fashion. This painting had a great impression on me being a Fashion major.
James Jacques Joseph Tissot, "L'Ambitieuse" (Political Woman) or also known as "The Reception", Oil on Canvas, 1952

2. Which artworks do I feel a connection with? Why?

A. The artwork I made a connetion with was "Eta d'oro" by Medardo Rosso. This was a sculpture of a mother and a baby. I feel as if I have such a great connection with this scupture because I am very close with my mom. This artwork made me look back and think of all my childhood memories and it made me think of how much my mother means to me.
Medardo Rosso, "Eta d'oro", Wax on plaster, 1886

B. "Dinamismo di un Cane al Guinzaglio" (Dynamism of a Dog on a Leash) by Giacomo Balla was an artwork that I connected with greatly. It stook out to me because I have two dogs of my own. I am a dog person and love dogs. I choose this picture becuase of the connection I have with it because it reminds me of my dogs and it is also an Italian piece of artwork. I am Sicilian and have family in Italy and from seeing an Italian artwork, it makes me feel connected with my family as well.
Giacomo Balla, "Dinamismo di un Cane al Gunzaglio" (Dynamism of a Dog on a Leash), 1912

C. Richard Huntington's painting "Eve" from 2010 connected with me. It was a picture of a lady with painted lines over it. This has such a great connection with me because of the story in the Bible of Adam and Eve, seeing that I am Catholic, this is what I was always taught and what I grew up to know. Also knowing that Eve was supposably the first women, connected with me. I feel as if it wasn't for Eve, would women really exisit? It is a crazy thought, but people never know what could be today if history did not happen.
Richard Huntington, "Eve", Acrylic and Charcoal on Canvas

3. Which artworks would I like to know more about? Why?

A. Nancy Dwyer's artwork, "Kill Yourself", 1989 stood out to me. When I saw this painting, I wanted to know so much more about it and the reasoning behind it. Dwyer lured me into her painting and I became fasinated with it. It made me wonder what would make someone want to create a painting that says "kill yourself"? Why would someone want to send a message like this out to teir audience? This painting brings a lot of questions to my mind and makes me wonder, which I believe is fasinating.
Nancy Dwyer, "Kill Yourself", Vinyl Paint on Canvas, 1989

B. "Convergence" by Jackson Pollack caught my eye. It is an artwork that has art splatters all over it. By looking at this painting, it can make the viewer think what was going through their mind when creating this. I would love to know the reasoning of the colors chosen and if they mean anything. The top of the painting made me wonder why there was so much black on top, was there a reason for it being so dark?
Jackson Pollack, "Convergence", Oil on Canvas, 1952

C. "Orange and Yellow" by Mark Rothko brought a lot of thoughts to my mind. I was wondering what was the significance of these two colors, orange and yellow? What was the reasoning behind the way the colors were placed? This is a very intriging painting because of the bright colors, it can really capture someone's eye, but it can leave the viewer wanting to know more about it because of how simple this painting is.

Value Scale and Color Theory

1. Creating the value scale and the color wheel was very interesting. It made me look from a different persepetive. I didnt realize how much time and effort it really took. I thought it would be simple and not complicated at all, and it was not so much complicated it was time consumming. I definitely made me learn a lot about colors and the values of color.

2. The media that I enjoyed working with the best was the color wheel. I like to expierment a lot with colors. I find it to be fun and interesting. It was a learning expierence for me. I thought making the secondary colors was very easy, it took a lot to make the black I thought.

3. The most important discovery in the creation of these studies was how much each value changes and the creation of the color black.

4. The most important information I learned from watching the videos of this project was to use Vellum paper when creating a value scale because it is better to use with graphite. It was also interesting how you should hold the pencil horizantally  and make circular strokes. For the color theory movie I found it interesting that the real primary color are cayan, magenta, and yellow; when in reality people think it being blue, red and yellow. Also how blue, red and yellow create brown and cayan, magenta and yellow create black.

Elements and Principles of Art

Space- This is a picture from Ft. Lauderdale Beach in Florida. This picture demonstrated space to me because of how much space is between the hotels/condos and the ocean.

Rhythm- I thought this picture was perfect for rhythm because of the way the waves move. They seem like its all insinct.

Harmony- The sunset in Siesta Key, Florida was a perfect match for harmony. There was no confussion with the picture; it all went together like one. It was such a peaceful picture for a viewer.

Movement- Movement adds excitement to a work of art. The snow falling I believe adds excitement to the picture.

Color- The picture is of a thunderstorm in Florida one night. The way that the moon and the sky reflected in the picture is unreal. The colors are beautiful. It shows how dark the sky is compared to the bright moon.

Unity- With unity it is when a picture comes together as one. This is a picture of Downtown Buffalo skyline. This picture to me, really shows the beauty of Buffalo. There are so many elements being demonstrated in this picture, the color, texture, form, shape, and line. The way the picture is, it is all united as one.

Value- This was a picture take from a wedding on a beach in Siesta Key, Florida. The little girl was the flower girl for the wedding. When I saw this picture the value was so strong. The black and white made the picture look beautiful!

Texture- This is a picture of the city of Chicago. The buildings were unbelievable. As soon as someone looks at this pciture they can automatically see the amazing texture in the buildings.
Shape- The moon in the dark Florida night sky was the perfect picture when I thought of shape. It shows how circular the moon really is.

Proportion- I chose this picture for proportion because of the way the cake is shaped. It is set from smallest part on the top to the largest part on the bottom.

Emphasis- This is when there are points of interest developed to pull the viewer's eye to the important part of the body of work. For this princple, I chose a picture from the Taj Mahal hotel in Atlantic City. The chandileers really stood out to me. The first things I notice when I look at this picture is the last chandileer with the blue lights beaming on it.

Balance- Balance is a sense of stability in the body of the work. It consists of repeating shapes and weight. The picture of the palm trees and the ocean stood out to me when I thought of balance. There are objects that are repeated and it really has a balance weight.

Variety- This picture is from Siesta Key, Florida. It shows the differences in the work. It shows so many different shapes, colors, and textures.

Line- This is a picture of a fountain in the Pier Shops in Atlantic City. The fountain goes along to music as well. This picture shows the lines of the water all going the same way.

Form- Form is an element that is three-dimensional and encloses volume. Based on this discription, I thought that the picture of the Bean in Chicago was perfect. It is a three-dimensional object and it encloses volume.

Colors and Emotions

1. Describe Color and it's effects on emotions. Use the appropriate vocabulary of color in your posting.

Color is is the visual perceptual property that is corresponding in humans to the catergoes of red, green, blue and others. Color derives from the spectrum of light. Color is a very powerful artistic element and it is very hard to control.Color plays a huge effect on emotions. The colors of a painting or artwork can change a person's feelings about that work greatly. There are certain colors that cause certain emotions, for example, dark colors cause sadness, anger, and aggression and bright colors cause happiness, joy, and good feelings.

2. What is a theoretical aspect of color that most intrigues/fascinates you? Why?

A theoretical aspect of color that most fascinates me is how it triggers a person's emotions greatly. I never really looked so hard into a work of art and felt my emotions change, now when I look at art I feel as if the emotions are so different from before I looked at the piece. Art is soemthing that is so powerful to a person, especially with colors. Colors can change a person's outlook greatly.!

3. In the Color video, what made the biggest impact on you in regards to color and it's effects on emotions?

Based on the Color video, the part that had the biggest impact on me in regards to color and it's effect on emotions was the quote of "when you see nature just think of the beauty". I thought it was interesting how the artist was paiting a picture of nature and he said "when paitning nature dont look at the tree, just put the colors in". I found that so interesting.! The other part I thought was fascinating was when the artist was looking at her work and she felt based on the colors the work was very violent; therefore she wanted to put in some other colors because she did not intend for her artwork to look violent.

4. In the Feelings video, what made the biggest impact on you in regards to color and it's effects on emotions?

From the Feelings video, the part of the video that had the biggest impact on me in regards to color and it's effects on emotions was how the speaker says how Goya speaks his imagination. By speaking your imagination it shows that the colors are based on that. The colors are speaking your emotions.

Aesthetics and Art

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.

For "Aesthetics: Philosophy of Arts", the key concepts I learned were the different view points of the different philosophers in history. Each of these Philosophers had a great viewpoint. They each had something different to say and to describe. They each had their own opiions and way of thinking, which to me was very interesting, especially with some being during the same time period. For "CARTA: Neurobiology Neurology and Art and Aesthetics", the key points I learned were the eight laws of art, how art affects the human mind greatly, articfacts are works of art, how the human brain plays a part in art, and Ramanchandran's example of peak shift.

2. Which philosopher's theroy on aesthetics do you feel is most important? Be sure to mention the philosphers name, era (time in history), and contribtion to the aesthetic theory in your response.

I believe that Aristotle’s theory on aesthetics is the most important. He didn’t discuss the idea, he analyze a specific art form tragedy. He quoted, “The chief forms of beauty are order and symmetry and definiteness, which the mathematical sciences demonstrate in a special degree.” Aristotle’s time in history was the 4th Century B.C. He inferred specific rules of composition; the most famous was the Three Unities. These unities consisted of unities of time, action and place. The unity of action was that a tragedy accrued with no subplots and each phase of the action is the consequence. The unity of time means that the timeframe should not exceed 24 hours. The unity of place is that the action should take place in the same location. The idea of beauty was overwhelmed by the correlation to god. Art theory was recast of a theory of refining technique. During the Renaissance the Neoanalytical aesthetics came into play. I find this philosopher’s theory interesting because of his three unities. It is very interesting how they were described.

3. What do you think about Changeux and Ramachandran scientific view of aesthetics and art? What was the most interesting fact you discovered from each speakers lecture?

Changeux and Ramachandran's scientific view of aesthetics and art were both very interesting! Each of these men had very good points of views and spoken upon different topics. The most interesting fact that I found from Changeux's lecture was the Discovery of Art Compostion regarding the Homo Sapians. I believe this is interesting becuase it is speaking about people and comparing them to art. I also found his definitions of arts and aesthetics interesting. I thought it was interesting how he spoke about artifacts being works of art and how he was descrbing the human body parts, like the brain. For Ramachandran's lecture, I found it to be interesting as well. The part that intrigued me was how he said "works of art have such an effect on the human mind". His eight laws of art caught my eye, the last one, "art as metaphor" was very interesting. I believe that both of these speakers were very interesting and each made their point across about their scientific view of art and aesthetics.

4. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?

The videos relate the the readings in the text in many different points. Both the texts and videos talk about the history of art, whether it is famous artists or famous philosophers; it is still considered history of art. Both describe the different viewpoints, the text describes the view points of artists on their artwork and the videos describe the famous philosophers and speaker's viewpoints on art, science and aesthetics. I found from reading and watching the videos, creatvity and aestethics were discussed as well.

5. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the topics in your reading?

I believe that the films gave me a different outlook on art in general. It made me realize that there are other peoples opinions and view points within art. Art is something that is very well known within people. I thought that the film about the two speaker's lectures made me think more about how art affects my brain. I never really realized how it does, it made me think more into creativity. These add depth to understanding the topics in my reading very much. It makes me understand more in depth the view points of these historic people and made me look more in their viewpoint rather than just in mine.
